It is with heavy hearts that the Johnson Memorial Funeral Directors and Leeds-Unity Funeral Service families announce the death of Mr. Howard Johnson. Our grand patriarch was an humble entrepreneur with a sincere love of people. He founded Johnson Memorial in 1967 with his beloved wife, Mrs. Odessa Pitts Johnson. Mr. Johnson was educated at Rosedale High School, Booker T. Washington Business College and Jefferson State Community College, where he earned credentials as a Funeral Director and Mortician. He began his life's calling under the tutelage of Dr. A.G. Gaston at Smith & Gaston Funeral Home. A World War II Army Air Corps Veteran, he fought the dignified battle of life until the end on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. He was united with St. Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church of Oxmoor since childhood. Mr. Johnson's distinguished legacy of service and grace transcends his earthly journey and lives on in each life he touched. Celebratory Service is 1:00 Tuesday at First Baptist Church-Roosevelt, 6012 Malcolm Avenue, Birmingham 35228. Rev. Roland U. Brown, Celebrant. Inhumation follows at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Bessemer. Mr. Johnson will lie in state on Sunday at Leeds-Unity Funeral Service, 7531 Parkway Drive, Leeds from Noon until 4:00 and from 6:00 until 8:00 at St. Matthew A.M.E., 2571 Goss Street, Oxmoor. Calling Hours at Johnson Memorial, Bessemer, Monday Noon until 9:00. To God be the glory for the things He has done. 

Alabama Funeral Directors and Morticians Association Members are requested to wear our official state uniform (gold blazer/ black slacks) at the Celebratory Service. Those who wish to participate in the processional are asked to drive a funeral coach and meet at Johnson Memorial, Bessemer between 10 AM - 11 AM.
