Mr. Ricky Nelson, 57, departed this life on Monday, March 15, 2021 in Louisville, Kentucky. Graveside service will be Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. in the Salem AME Methodist Church Cemetery, Bronwood, Georgia. Meadows Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
On the evening of March 15, 2021, our Heavenly Father called
his Angel, Ricky E. Nelson, from his earthly assignment back into
Heaven.
Ricky was born to the late Arthur E. Nelson and Mary Alice Kitchen-
Nelson, both of Terrell County, Dawson, Georgia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister,
Beverly Nelson-Pearman; nephew, Jeremy A. Nelson Barnes;
stepfather, The Honorable Brother William Muhammad Smith;
aunt, Katie Mae Kitchen-Lunsford; and a host of great-grandparents,
grandparents, great-aunts, aunts, great-uncles, uncles, and cousins
on both sides of the family.
As a young child, Ricky enjoyed playing in the country with his
siblings and cousins. He joined Salem AME Methodist Church of
Bronwood, Georgia, as a young child. When he went to visit his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur T. and Sallie V. Nelson, during
the summer, he attended church with them as well. Ricky was
indeed a Believer! He believed in God and loved his family dearly.
He enjoyed listening to Country Music, in particular, Willie Nelson
and Kenny Rogers, Classic Rock, such as Lips Inc’s Funkytown,
and more. He had a love for traveling and exploring new places; we
believe that love is what lead to his career as a trucker.
Ricky received his elementary education at Lillie Cooper Primary
& Carver Elementary in the early and mid-seventies. He then went
on to Terrell County High School until the eleventh grade before
transferring to Americus Technical College to obtain his high school
diploma and drafting & blueprinting diploma in the early 1980s.
Later, he went to trucking school in 1989 to become a Professional
OTR (Over The Road) Driver and International Driver. He drove
for 32 years for several companies such as Mayflower, Arcadian/
Munson, and a trucking company based out of Canada, Cannon
Express, USA Truck, and finally, DeBoer Transportation, Inc. for
10 years.
Trucking was Ricky’s love and journey! The trucking industry gave
Ricky the opportunity to earn a decent living for himself, and it
also allowed for him to reach back and help his immediate family
members and others. Ricky was a humble and quiet man with good
qualities.
Ricky leaves to cherish his memories: four sisters, Linda Nelson-
Barnes of Alpharetta and Dawson, Georgia, Amy (Joe Eddie)
Young of Albany, Georgia, Retired Captain Salima Carter of Fort
Mitchell, Alabama, and Sahirah L. (Orintho or O.J.) Grier of
Albany, Georgia; three brothers, Cornelius Nelson of Dawson,
Georgia, Curtis Nelson of Stone Mountain and Dawson, Georgia,
and Zayet J. Nelson of Stone Mountain, Georgia; great-aunt,
Bertha Sampson; a very special aunt, Debbie Nelson; special nieces
who he raised as his own, Freneshia Pearman-Jones and Valneka
Pearman; and a host of loving and caring aunts, uncles, nephews,
nieces, cousins, great-nephews and nieces, and beloved co-workers.
