Doctor James D. Woods, 77, of Albany, Georgia departed this life Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. under the porte-cochere at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 901 S. Westover Blvd., Albany, Georgia. Interment will follow Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 12:00 noon in the Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville, Georgia. Meadows funeral home in charge of arrangements.

James D. Woods, M.D., was born on March 30, 1943 in Norfolk, VA.  He was raised in Washington, NC also known as “Little Washington,” where he he was afforded a rich country heritage.  He was a 1961 graduate of Jones High School. He pursued his undergraduate study at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania where he earned his BS in biology in 1965.  He was also commissioned as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve in l965 after which he earned his M.D. degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN in 1969.

Dr. Woods was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and was president of the Nu Chapter from 1964 to 1965.  Dr. Woods completed his medical internship at Naval Hospital Great Lakes, IL and was transferred to Naval Hospital Oakland, CA to complete his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN).  In l973 he reported to Naval Regional Medical Center, Long Beach, CA where he was served as a staff OB-GYN physician and as Assistant Chief of the Department of OB-GYN. After his release from active duty in 1976, following a break in service, he reaffiliated with the Naval Reserve at Naval Reserve Center Columbus, GA in l984. While assigned to NR Naval Hospital Jacksonville DET 308, he was promoted to Captain in June 1992.

Dr. Woods was board certified in OB-GYN and was in private practice with Willie Adams, Jr., M.D., FACOG for over 32 years in the office of Adams and Woods, MD, PC.  In addition to his private practice, He was employed at the Dougherty County Health Department for 35+ years, and was employed by Albany Area Primary Health Care at Mirian Worthy Women’s Health Care in 2009 for 4+ years.

In addition to all of his accomplishments, he was an outstanding leader in his community. He became an ordained minister which was under leadership of Larry Cornett, New Covenant Church, and Albany, Georgia on February 28, 1993.  He has been involved with numerous professional organizations and charities in the Albany, Georgia area.  Out of all his accomplishments, he was proud and dedicated to The Wednesday Night Bible Study Class which was rooted in the Greater Cutliff Grove Baptist Church in the fall of 1980. During this time, the class expanded to include other outreach ministries. Being fully aware of the great commission of God for believers to share the Gospel with the unsaved, Dr. Woods led the Bible Study Class into a Film Ministry during the summer of 1982.   Because of Dr. Woods desired to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only, he felt led to reach out to the less fortunate. In 1983, this gesture evolved into the first Pre-Thanksgiving Banquet, which was held at New Covenant Church.  The less fortunate consisted of the elderly, the handicapped and the underserved of the city of Albany and surrounding Cities. This Banquet lasted for over 20+ years with Dr. Woods and his wife as the organizers and leaders along with the bible class.  He also was the founder of Martin Luther King Outreach Mission in l993 which lasted for 10 years.  He was a four-time recipient of the MLK Award, two individual, one with Adams & Woods, MD, PC and with MLK Outreach Mission. Dr. Woods was also employed with Albany Area Primary Health Care at Mirian Worthy Women’s Health Center for a few years. He also worked at the Dougherty County Health department for numerous years.  He also served on the Board at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany, Georgia. He was one of the founders of Albany Bank and Trust where he served on the board for 10+ years.  He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Albany, GA where he taught a bible study class on Tuesday night.

Dr. Woods was married to the love of his life for 53 years to the former Ella Veree Pitts of Birmingham, AL. They have three sons: Daemon, James and Nathan; two Daughter-in-laws Tajuannia and Angela along with six grandchildren, Jason, Rebecca, Jalisa, David, twin girls (Hope and Faith); three great-grandchildren, Montrail Gibson, Bryson and Brooklyn Woods.

Condolences to the family of the late Great Dr. James Woods. My heart goes out to the family in the loss of such a great man. This is truly a loss for the city of Albany and surrounding communities. He delivered my Children and Grandchildren. Dr. Woods was a friend to all whether he knew you for 1 min or 30 years his hand was always held out to help anyone in need. His compassion for people was unmeasurable. I have witnessed his love, for mankind and his generosity to serve those less fortunate or just to lend a helping hand. He feed the hungry, house the homeless, gave a lending hand and anyway possible. Compassion for others, like the heart of Christ. Countless memories of his relentless desire to serve God and others. He baptized me, he helped me restore my walk with the Lord. Servant of God well done, enter into your rest. Your work is done, and your victory is won. Until that great day when the trumpet shall sound and we shall all meet again, may your sleep be peaceful until then. With Deepest sympathy……….. Harold and Mattie Woodson and family

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ella and the Woods family on learning of Dr. Woods passing. God allowed our paths to cross many years ago while working at Phoebe Putney Hospital. Dr Woods and Ella were such loving and giving people, and he always had time for you no matter how busy he was. I will always remember the Wednesday night Bible studies and the Pre-Thanksgiving banquets that we were a part of for over 20 years. God knew he would be a solider of His army from birth, just as he knew Jeremiah would be. Jeremiah:1 and 5. God love and blessings. Willie and Connie Shannon

Dr. Wood was a doctor who prayed for and with his patients. While there are many that do, he was the first one I encountered who did. That is the thing that I will always remember about him. I still have a copy of the beautiful poem that was displayed on his wall. He was a good and godly man who has gone on to receive his reward. My condolences to his family.

Dr. Woods was a wonderful person and caring soul. Being a pillar in the community and the church, he will be greatly missed. Not too many places will you find a praying doctor. He didn't mind letting his patients know, he was the doctor, but God was the Healer. Rest well. You earned your wings!!!

To the Family, the Lord Declares and Promises: In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself. Imagine a place where they’ll be no more trouble. A place where pain and heartaches will cease. Imagine a place where there will be no more sorrow - That’s the way Heaven will be. Imagine a place where there will be no more darkness. A place where the sun is gonna shine in the night. Imagine a land where there will be no more trials - That’s the way Heaven will be. With Love and Our Deepest Sympathy: Rev. Deborah Stephens & Family
