On June 13, 1951, Roger Louis Knighton, Sr. was born to the late James Knighton, Sr. and Josephine Hammond-Knighton in Albany, Georgia. He was the eighth of fifteen children, some of whom preceded him in death.

At a young age, Roger accepted Christ and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church and later New Birth Fellowship.

He was educated in the Dougherty County School System and later graduated from Albany High School as a 1971 graduate. While attending Albany High, he was known for his incredible skills as a middle linebacker, which earned him the nicknames “Roger the Dodger” and “RamJet”. With those amazing skills, he was able to achieve many accolades in athletics and later became a coach for the City of Albany Recreational Department Little League Football and baseball.

Soon after high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Vietnam War. While in the Navy, Roger married the love of his life, Audrey Lee Mims on June 6, 1972. Later, the two gave birth to Roger Louis Knighton, Jr. and Ignaica Knighton. Roger was a loving and devoted father to his children, who both preceded him in death.

After his tour, Roger was employed as a fireman at the MCLB in Albany, Ga. He also believed in empowering his community and therefore sold life insurance to numerous African American families. He was very active in the lives of young people, whether it was through financial blessings, swimming lessons, or correcting their use of Standard English. He spent most of his free time listening to the Braves, going to the YMCA, and spending time with his family.

He leaves to cherish his memories to his four grandchildren, Zynia Laster, Audreya Carter, Jacravein Brown, and Trenton Knighton, all of Albany, GA; three great grandchildren, Cortrill Carter, Albany, GA, Braylen Brown, Alaia Brown, both of Moultrie, GA; four brothers, Gene Knighton, Gary Knighton, both of Albany, GA, Milton (Vickie) Knighton, Jasper, FL, Joseph Knighton, Jennings, FL; one sister, Beverly Williams, Albany, GA and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, classmates, and friends.
