Dr. Robert L. Marshall, 91, of Albany, Georgia departed this life Friday, June 12, 2020 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany, Georgia. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2020 in the Floral Memorial Gardens, 120 Old Pretoria Road, Albany, Georgia with Military Honors. Meadows Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Robert L. Marshall was born November 25, 1928 to the late Charlie and Louise Marshall in Lee County, Georgia.  Upon graduation from Lee County High School, he entered the U. S. Army where he served for more than three years. After serving his country, he earned degrees from Fort Valley State College, Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University.

From an early age, he dedicated his life to Christ and developed a personal relationship with God.  His spiritual fellowship began at McAfee Grove Baptist Church in Lee County, Georgia.  Later uniting in service at Third Kiokee Baptist Church and ultimately with Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  At Mount Zion, he served as a Deacon and utilized his gift of teaching as a Sunday School Teacher.  He was enthusiastic and passionate about “Sunday School”. He consistently touted the benefits of reviewing the Sunday School lesson before Sunday School. 

A staunch advocate for education, Dr.  Marshall served the educational community for more 42 years. Early in his career, he taught the young and the not so young.  He taught at Monroe High School and simultaneously served as Director of Teacher Training for the Adult Basic Education Program. In 1965, he accepted a position at Albany State College as an associate professor.  In the years ahead he transitioned from the classroom to college administration, serving as Director of Institutional Research for Albany State. Dr. Marshall ultimately served as Director of the Inter-Campus Unit, an entity of the University System of Georgia, serving both Albany State College and Darton College.   

He served his community through various organizations which included; Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Delta Delta); Omega Psi Pi Fraternity; Criterion Club; a lifelong supporter and board member of the Boys Club of Albany, Albany Primary Healthcare and the Slater King Senior Citizens Center. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bessie Austin.  He leaves to celebrate his life and add to his legacy, his wife, Lula Johnson Marshall; children, Patricia Hill and Denise Marshall (Albany); Cassandra Marshall (Macon, Ga.); and Robert L. Marshall, Jr. (Ileen) (Tupelo, Ms.); grandchildren: Brian Hill, Charmaine Clark (Stephin),Courtney Marshall, Robert L. Marshall III, Crystal Wilson and Peaches Jones; great grands, Bianna Hill, Keenan Thierse, Brian Hill, Jr. and Nasir Swan.

He was further blessed to have a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.

    Though I never had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Marshall personally, I do know he was a wonderful man who left a great legacy. My deepest condolences to his family.

    I'm just seeing the announcement about Dr. Marshall. I'm so sorry for your loss. He will be missed by many. He was such an asset to the Third Kiokee Baptist Church and he has been missed. Prayers for the family.
