MRS. RUTH LEAK HARGROVE

On April 16, 2020, God placed Ruth (Leak) Hargrove into a deep slumber, only to awake in paradise to be with HIM.  What would Ruth want people to know about her first and foremost?  She would want people meeting her for the first time to see the GOD in her, feel his presence and know how much she lived for God!

Ruth was born on January 20, 1941 to two loving Parents, Clayton Sr. and Pearl Leak.  Ruth was born and raised in rural Anson County, NC.  She was baptized at an early age at the Family Church.  Ruth often shared stories with her children of her fond memories of growing up with her siblings.  Her children would listen with delight and awe as she spoke about how well her Mother cooked and how hard her Father worked to provide for his family.  That is where Ruth’s strong work ethic, determination, ambition, and drive emanated.  Ruth and her Siblings were tightly knit.  Ruth looked forward to the Family Reunions and reminiscing with them about the good times.

When Ruth turned 18, she ventured north to New York City to join her Sisters, Nancy and Lizzie, with hopes and dreams of becoming independent and creating a great life for herself.  Soon after moving there, Ruth met and married Artis Hargrove.  From this union, she bore two children, Dexter and Bridget.  Ruth landed a job with Bulova Watch Company and later with Elmhurst Hospital where she worked for 27 years in the Physical Therapy Department.  During Ruth’s tenure with Elmhurst, she received many accolades, commendations and was Employee of the month.  Ruth’s hard work paid off and she and Artis were able to purchase a home in Queens, NY where they lived for over 30 years.  Ruth was a favorite in her Neighborhood due to her welcoming and warm spirit, great southern cooking and beautiful smile.  People would pay Ruth to bake her delicious cakes and pies.  Relatives, friends, and neighbors alike would flock to her home for that good soul food she was known for.  Later came another addition to the family, Ruth’s Baby Girl, Vicky.  Ruth doted on her children until the day she took her last breath.  There was NOTHING she wouldn’t do for them!  Ruth loved children so much that she become a Foster Mother and helped shape the lives of many children whom to this day still revere in the thoughts of all they’ve accomplished because of her love and support.  She never met a stranger and would give anyone the shirt off her back.  Many people knew that if they needed help, they could depend on Ruth to come through for them, no questions asked.

Ruth was a proud member of Majority Baptist Church.  She sang in the Gospel Chorus and developed long lasting loving friendships with its members.  Ruth raised her children in the Church and instilled in them the importance of always putting God first, morals, values, and integrity.  Ruth’s children take everything that she taught them everywhere they go.  I know this sounds cliché but, she was THE BEST MOTEHR that God has ever placed on this earth!!  Her children adore her and are beyond grateful to have had a Mother with a heart of gold, as she did.  She was selfless, compassionate, loving, humorous, and full of joy!  She could always put a smile on the faces of her children, with her silly remarks, quick wit, and sharp tongue.

Later in life, Ruth followed her daughter, Bridget down to Atlanta, GA where she lived out the rest of her days.  Here she became a member of Old Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Ruth served as a Missionary and once again developed lasting friendships.   Ruth favorite pastimes included going to I-HOP, Golden Corral, and talking on the phone. She also loved to watch her soap operas and religious programs.  She would tell people not to call her between 2-3pm, while she watched General Hospital, lol!  She also loved riding shotgun with her daughter Bridget.  Like her Mother Pearl, Ruth would say, “I love to ride!”  Anytime Bridget left the house, Ruth would come along to enjoy the conversation and scenery.  Ruth was the apple of her Grandchildren’s eyes, who referred to her as “Nana.”  They had an unbreakable bond and memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Ruth leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory her Children, Dexter Hargrove, Bridget Hargrove-Carroll (Zeren), and Victoria Leverette (La’Mar).  Artis Hargrove preceded her in death.  She also leaves her Grandchildren, Zeren (ZJ) Carroll Jr., Kauri Ledbetter, Ayden Leverette, Anthony Leverette, Sebastian Leverette, and Ariel Leverette.  Her Parents who preceded her in death.  Her loving surviving Siblings, Georgianna Wilson, Nancy Ledbetter, Mary Feggins, Joleatha Rorie, Betty Walters, and Lizzie Broadnax.  Her Siblings who preceded her in death are James Leak, Anita Marie Leak, Dewey Leak, Edna Hall, Freddie Leak, and Clayton Leak Jr.  Lastly, she leaves a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Homegoing Services were held on Friday,
April 24, 2020, 12:00 noon, Smith's Memorial Chapel, 604 Salisbury Street, Wadesboro, North Carolina. Interment followed in the family plot of the West Rocky Ford Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
