Mother Willie Mae Mathis-Johnson, 88, of Albany, Georgia departed this life Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern, NC. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. from the First Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, 7108 Newton Road, Albany, Georgia. Rev. E.J. Mallory is the pastor and will provide the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Blue Springs Cemetery, Blue Springs Road, Albany, Georgia. Her remains will lie in state at the church Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until the service hour. Meadows Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Willie Mae Mathis Johnson, better known as “Willa Mae” and “Mommae,” was born June 15, 1931, to Daisy Mae Jackson Mathis Harris of Blue Spring Plantation and Tommie Lee Mathis of Leesburg, GA. She joined First Bethesda Baptist Church, formerly known as “Shepherd,” at an early age. She sang in the Bethesda Choir. She was also a committed member of the Order of Easter Star, Chapter # ??? Under the late Sarah Frison. She was a member of the American Legion and Elk Lodge Temple Henry Johnson 1204. Mommae was one of the early members to join the Freedom Singers under the direction of Rutha Harris. She also joined the Voices of Harmony under the late director, Lorraine Allen, and daughter. Mommae attended school in Dougherty County and furthered her education at Albany State College, now Albany State University. She moved to Chicago, Illinois, and attended Model School Academy and Accounting School from which she graduated. She worked for Aero Commander, USMC Albany, Georgia Mess Hall and later in her life, she worked for the Dougherty County School System until she retired due to health reasons. Mommae married the late Jesse Lee Johnson. During their marriage, they had twin daughters, the late Beverly Johnson and Ritahayworth Delois Johnson (Lee) Bowen, Sr, Cherry Point, NC. Along with her daughter, Ritahayworth, she leaves to mourn six grandchildren: Michael (Xzandria) RL Simmons, Albany, GA, Tyrus D. Simmons, Pensacola, FL, Tytonda M. Bowen -Morris, Lee (Amey) J. Bowen, Jr., Tyreshonda LM Bowen -Valdez, and Tyrerhonda LL Bowen -Crosley, all of Havelock, NC. She also leaves ten great grandchildren: Neychea A. Colvin, Michael RL Simmons, Jr., Kabrina Boston, Tyree’quentavis MR Bowen, Lee Jalani Bowen, Seth Rodriquez, JANIARitalani Masucci Bowen, Diego Valdez, Gav”Riel Aharn Bowen -Crosley and two great great grandchildren: Blossom Bowen and Jac’cobi Bowen. In addition, she leaves three brothers: Napoleon (Sarah) Harris, Tommie Lee (Stephanie) Mathis and Sam Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mommae is preceded in death by her father, Tommie Lee Mathis (1968), brother, Dan Mathis (1993), mother, Daisy Mae Harris (2010), sister, Mary Spane (2011), brother, Roosevelt Mathis (2018), great grandson, Michael Masucci and s -father, John Henry Harris (1967).
