Ms. Mildred Yearby, 88

Mildred Jean Yearby was born May 22, 1931 to Hannah Baker Yearby Fisher and William Yearby.  She departed this life  on September 24, 2019.  She was raised in a Christian family by her grandmother, Maggie Beatrice Wilson Baker.  

She was a very proud graduate of Morris Brown College, Atlanta, Georgia and assisted over 200 students in receiving adequate financial aid.  She was a devoted educator in the NYC Education Department for 47 years.  On May 12, 2014, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Morris Brown College.

She was an avid reader and during conversation, she would often stop and recite a sonnet from Shakespeare.  She was a Life Member of the NAACP, the Alliance of Black School Educators of NYC, the National Alliance of Black Educators, The Heritage, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the Morris Brown College National Alumni Association.  

She leaves to cherish her memory; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Yearby, Rome, NY; nieces, Carolyn Nelson, Pittsburgh, PA and Mildred Yolande Taylor, Mt. Vernon, NY; nephews, John H. Yearby (Kristen), Richmond, VA, Patrick Yearby and Richard Yearby, Rome, NY; dear friend, Veronica Ramseur; godson, Terrence Ramseur, Columbia, SC; affectionately called daughter, Erica J. Smith, Douglasville, GA; goddaughter, Beverly Ann Dinkins Learmont (Nigel), Decatur, GA; cousin, Frank Thomas; newest niece and mentee, Melonie Haywood and a host of relatives, colleagues and friends.

Funeral services were Friday, October 4, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Quitman with Pastor Renee Theophile officiating. Burial followed in the North End Cemetery in Quitman. Condolences may be made by visiting  Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
