Obituary
Nelson Johnny Whitaker was born October 2, 1929 to the late Gordon and Helen Daisy Whitaker in Rich Square, North Carolina.

At an early age he became a member of the Apostolic Faith of our Lord Jesus Christ under the leadership of Bishop S.C. Johnson.

In 1950 he met and married the late Elizabeth Whitaker (Bert, as she was called). From that union eight surviving children were born: Johnny (Joyce) of Sumter, SC; Mary of Sumter, SC; Katie of New Jersey; Larry (Jill) of Sumter, SC, Tony (Charlene) of New Jersey, Alice of New Jersey, Joseph of Bronx, NY, and our late baby sister, Geraldine of New Jersey.

Nelson worked at Coastal Lumber Co. in Weldon, North Carolina. In 1967 he and his family relocated to Newark, NJ where he worked at North Jersey Foundry and Overbrook Hospital from where he retired.

Nelson had a passion for music – he loved his guitar and would carry it with him wherever he went, even playing it on the streets anywhere to whomever would listen.

Nelson was predeceased by his brother, Lee Earnest (Rosalie) and his sister Helen. Nelson is survived by his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grands. He is also survived by his siblings, Brother Thomas of Brooklyn, NY; Lee Otis of North Carolina; Dorena of Virginia Beach, VA; Mary Lee of North Carolina; Roberta (Joshua) of North Carolina, Connie (Rudolph) of North Carolina. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lovingly Submitted, The Family
