Born in Cleveland, Ohio November 20, 1978, Deontae Jernel Sanders Sr. began his journey through life. He was known to many as “Uncle D”, “Big D”, “Bump” and his beloved wife affectionately called him “BAE.” Deontae was the only son of the late Carolyn D. Sanders and cherished by his grandparents the late James and Virginia Sanders.

Deontae graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1997.  He pursued many career fields, including one of his many talents, music. He auditioned for MTV Making The Band with Puff Daddy and American Idol, his amazing voice took him far in the audition process. He was on 106 and Park in a singing competition and sang one of Mariah Carey’s songs. He recorded two albums, “The Making of A Superstar” and “Everyone needs a Scorpio.”  Deontae went on to get his barber’s license from Vogue Barber School.

In 2004, he transitioned his love for music by relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina and dedicated his life to his family, exclusively.  On November 24, 2009 Deontae married the love of his life, LaQuisha. Although his most cherished role was that of a father to his four precious children; his love and support for them was endless. He supported Lil Dee with music and basketball; Zion and Logan with showing them the family business and sporting activities; and “Daddy’s Little Meatball” Layla. He supported her endlessly through cheer competitions, dance recitals and school plays. He taught his daughter how a lady should be treated.

Deontae worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system as a Transportation Specialist for 14 years. All the kids affectionately knew him as “Mr. D.” All of the parents and children considered him family. He obtained an Associate of Arts degree from Central Piedmont Community College and Bachelor of Arts-Criminal Justice from Belmont Abbey College.

Deontae decided to nurture his true calling in life, as an entrepreneur.  His entire life he felt a strong connection with expressing his love through food.  Thus, Rollin’ with Uncle Dee was born. You could see him any time in his black and orange food truck serving the best soul food in town.

Deontae was a loving husband, father, brother, cousin, and friend. Everyone who met Deontae loved him, his infectious personality and joyful laugh lit up any room. His style of keeping up with the latest sneakers was unmatched.  He knew how to make money grow and could always find a deal. His home and heart were an open door to anyone who needed a listening ear, counseling session, or a great meal no matter who you were. He enjoyed swimming, traveling, summers off with the kids, cooking, and entertaining.

On September 4, 2019 Deontae died unexpectedly.

Deontae leaves to cherish his memories and continue his legacy, wife: LaQuisha Sanders, children: Deontae Jr., Zion, Logan, and Layla and special cousin: Frank Campbell; stepfather: Gary Crawford (Vanessa) of Gastonia, NC;  his uncles: Jerome Sanders (Ronda) of Cleveland, OH, Jernel O.
