DEACON JAMES THOMAS COX

Deacon James Thomas Cox was born, and raised, in Morven, N.C. to the late sharecroppers Deacon Johnny Cox and Deaconess Mattie Broadie-Cox, on October 23, 1954. He was amongst 21 of the “Cox” children. Deacon Cox departed his life on August 6, 2019 at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center (CMC-Main) in Charlotte, NC, where he was surrounded by family.

James accepted Christ, as his Lord and Savior, at an early age, where he joined White Oak Grove Baptist Church, in Morven, NC, and remained a faithful and dedicated member, serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Choir Member, Vice President of the Usher Board, Financial Secretary of the church, and other Auxiliaries. During James’ time as a servant of God, he served as a devoted missionary, where he visited the Sick and Shut-In.

When James was at the tender age of seventeen (17), he met the love of his life, Hazel Sturdivant Cox, and they were joined in holy matrimony on May 17, 1980, where they remained?married for thirty-nine (39) years. James, raised his children, granddaughter, Hazel Whyte, and grandchildren, teaching them to stand on the word of God.

James Thomas Cox was a 1972 graduate of Bowman Senior High School, and he attended Barber-Scotia College. Also, Deacon Cox, received his Electrician’s License through Anson Community College. He was a Mason of the Masonic Lodge #75 in Morven, NC. James’ was an official basketball referee for many years. James worked at Lakeshore Financial Company. He was a Collection Agent for 7 years, He worked at Cuddy Farms 28 years.

Preceding him in death were: his parents, Johnny and Mattie Cox; 14?brothers and sisters: Leon Cox, Willie Mae Cox, Jannie Bell Steadman, Lil Johnny Cox, Verline Howard, Shirley Cox, Loretta Johnson, Martha Woods, Johnny W. Cox, Walter Cox, Emma Cox-Lovelace, his Mother-in-Law, Era Sturdivant.

James Thomas Cox leaves to cherish, and continue his legacy: his beloved wife, Hazel Sturdivant Cox; 1 son: Deron Cox (Tomeka Borden) of Lilesville, NC; 4 daughters: Schanan Cox (James Jackson), Tawana Cox both of Charlotte, NC, Katrina Cox Caraway of Wingate, NC, Kasimattie Cox-Burroughs (Devon Burroughs) of Raleigh, NC; his grandchildren: Dequan Cox of High Point, NC, Ty-Liyah McCrimmon, Hazel Whyte, Jerrette McCrimmon all of Charlotte, NC, Breonna Cox of Lilesville, NC, Ciara Jackson of Charlotte, NC, Zayden Caraway of Wingate, NC, Jasmine Jackson of Charlotte, NC, Areonna Cox of Lilesville, NC; 4 sisters: Roberta Goins of Long Island, NY, Ruth (Tony) Massey of Brooklyn, NY, Pearline McCoy of Morven, NC, Minnie Cox of Rochester, NY; 3 brothers: Robert J. Cox of Camden, NJ, Willie Cox of Long Island, NY; Freddie (Donna) Cox of Rochester, NY, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; 4 Sisters-in-Law: Garletha (Johnny) Pratt of Lilesville, NC, Mary (Rev. Eddie) Weathers of Charlotte, NC, Ophelia Sturdivant of Wadesboro, NC, Annie (Lawrence) Parsons of Wadesboro, NC; 6 Brothers-in-Law: Leon (Beverly) Sturdivant of Charlotte, NC, Charles (Bonita) Sturdivant, Bruce (Mary) Sturdivant both of Morven, NC, James (Cathy) Sturdivant of Harrisburg, NC, Baxter Willoughby of Charlotte, NC; James’ Special Children: David and Loretta Bey of Charlotte, NC; his God-Children: Darren McCrae, Crystal Sturdivant, Eraka Sturdivant Diggs and Veraka Sturdivant; Special Friends; Keith Whyte of Chicago, Ill, Sophia Edwards of High Point NC, and Johnny Ingram of Wadesboro, NC.




The Services to honor and celebrate the Life and Legacy of Deacon Cox were held on Sunday, August 11, 2019, 3:00pm, Smith's Memorial Chapel, 604 Salisbury Street, Wadesboro, North Carolina.  Burial followed in the family plot of the Galilee AME Zion Church Cemetery, Morven, North Carolina.
