Gladys Jones Hendrix was born on April 15, 1924 to the late Burpee and Inice Wright Jones in Frolona, GA in Heard County.  She is the oldest of three children.  She lost her mother and brother when she was only five years of age.  Her father remarried to Mary Lucy White who was a wonderful mother to her and her sister, Glancy, raising them until they were adults.  They moved to Carroll County when she was in her early twenties at which time, she met her beloved husband, Robert Hendrix.

From this union five children were born, Sylvester Hendrix, Aubrey Hendrix, Gwendolyn Thomas, Geraldine Jackson and Delana Hendrix.  She has 14 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.  She extended and opened her home to many others.  Being inspired by a loving and wonderful stepmother she decided to help other children who may have lost their parents or have been neglected or abused by their parents by becoming a foster mother.  She has received over 200 children in her home.  Some were there for only overnight and some stayed several weeks, months and even years, but they all lovingly called her, “Big Mama”.  She was called “Big Mama” not because of her size, but because of her heart.  God gave her a heart to love these children as her own and instilled the same morals and values bestowed upon her own children.  She remained a foster mother until she was not able due to her health up to her mid-80’s.  Throughout the years she continued to have strong relationships with many of them.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Anthony Wright and Henry Jones, her grandmothers, Anna Byrd Jones and Esther Wright, both parents, Burpee Jones and Inice Wright Jones and Stepmother, Mary Lucy Jones, her husband, Robert Hendrix, her youngest daughter, Delana Hendrix, and granddaughter, Kira Hendrix, her sister, Glancy Brown Henderson, her brother, Ford Jones, who died at 9 months old.

She leaves her legacy to her sons, Major Sylvester (Arlena) Hendrix (USAF Retired) and Major Aubrey (Rita) Hendrix (USAF Retired), her daughters, Pastors Gwendolyn (Charles) Thomas and Geraldine Hendrix (Wayne) Jackson, her Goddaughter, Exie Dean O'Neal Reese, her sister in love, Christine Hendrix, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, her great-great grandchildren, her God granddaughter and God great grandchildren, her God great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and foster children along with many close cousins and relatives, her church family and many friends.

I grew up with her daugter Geraldine and I remember her mother always had a sweet smile. She will be missed and remembered in the resurrection that God has promised us at John 5:28,29.

To The Family, I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I also want to share the comfort of John 5:28,29 where we are promised that those who have fallen asleep in death have the hope of receiving a "resurrection" back to life. Life on an earth restored to a beautiful paradise, Psalms 37:11 says, "The meek will possess the earth and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." While we await that wonderful time please find comfort in these promises.
