Mrs. Josephine Newsome Spencer, 75

On July 19, 2019, Mrs. Josephine Newsome Spencer departed this life at her home in the Simmon Hill, Georgia, after a lengthy illness.  Mrs. Spencer was born on December 9, 1944, in the Nankin Community of Brooks County.  She was the oldest of five children born to the late Joseph and Mary Louise Newsome. 

She graduated from Washington Street High School in 1964 and attended Savannah State College (now Savannah State University) in Savannah, Georgia.  She met the love of her life, Micheal R. Spencer, at her parents’ place of business, the Quitman Soda Shop, during a visit home from college in 1967.  They were married in 1968.  She was employed at Bell South/AT&T until her retirement in 1996.  After her family relocated back to the Simmon Hill area in 2008, and following her husband’s death, she reunited with her home church, Sweetfield Missionary Baptist.

Mrs. Spencer leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Angela Michelle Peterson (Anthony), Dixie, GA; a son, Micheal C. Spencer, Orlando, FL; two sisters, Mary Newsome Roberts, Valdosta, GA and Betty Newsome Stroud (Jimmy), Quitman, GA; three brothers, Curtis Newsome (Lillie), Rockledge, FL; Joe Newsome (Emma), Stone Mountain, GA; and Willie Newsome, Macon, GA and a host of relatives and friends, as well as her Sweetfield Baptist Church family, Brooks County Dialysis staff, and Bethany Hospice staff.

Funeral services were Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 3:00 P.M. at Simmon Hill MB Church in Dixie, GA with Pastor James Thompson officiating. Burial followed in the Spencer Cemetery in Dixie.
