Naomi Joyce Southerland, 64, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at her residence. She was born May 28, 1955 in Robeson County to the late Prentice and Ella Mae Southerland. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Jean Southerland, Linda Wall Marshall and Nina LaRue Zinnerman; two brothers, James Reynold Southerland and Levoris Gerard Southerland.

Naomi was a longtime member of Refuge Baptist Church. She worked a salad maker and line cook at J&S Cafeteria before declining in health. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and reading. She was devoted to spending time with her family.

Surviving to treasure her precious memories are two daughters, Shontanna (Jackie) Watson and Brittany Jernigan; one son, Franklin Valdez Southerland; one honorary daughter, Pansy Hylton; one honorary son, Rodney Byerly; one sister, Willeaner Little; eleven grandchildren, Kaili S. Ingram, Keena L. Southerland, Ja’Niah J. Watson, Quantarius V. Watson, Jackie D. Watson, Saquanna Sturdivant, Tiara Campbell, Bryana Campbell, Jeremiah Moody, Jordan Jernigan and Matthew Jernigan; one great-grandchild, Camieyah L. Watson; close cousins, Linda Morgan, James McDougald and longtime friend, Beverly Fields.

Homegoing service will be held Saturday, July 20, 2109 at 4:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1710 East Green Drive. Interment will follow at Guil-Rand Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 3:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

    I have FOND memories of Naomi! She never met a stranger! She embraced me as family when I first met her and she kept me as such until he passing on home. She will TRULY be missed! To the family, prayers are continually going up for you! Much luv!
