Betty Louise Hawkins Patterson was born to the late Joseph (Joe) Hawkins, and the late Cora Shines Hawkins in Citronelle, Alabama, January 23, 1946. She departed this life June 1, 2019. She grew up in Citronelle along with three older siblings: Edrice Jeanne, the late, George (brother) Calvert and the late Peggy Ann; and three younger siblings JoAnne, Frankie Carolyn and the late Mark Anthony, (Tony).

As a teen-ager, Betty joined the Church of God in Citronelle, Alabama where she was a regular soloist and Sunday School teacher. She was affiliated, on each Base, with the Church. After graduating from Citronelle High School, Betty studied Child Development and Education at Tuskegee University. She taught in the Detroit School System.

In 1963, Betty and Dwight Patterson, met in Fort Benning, Georgia and became husband and wife shortly thereafter. To this union were born two sons, the late Steven Michael (Mike) Patterson and Brian Keith Patterson. Army Enlisted, Dwight Patterson, Betty, and sons were stationed at bases in Texas, California, Washington, DC, Kentucky, Alaska and Oklahoma.

Betty Louise Patterson was a beloved member of the First Institute Family Worship Center for many years. Her love of people and generous heart endeared her to both the Church and Gastonia community.

For many years, Betty was a missionary with the gift of caring for senior citizens and shut- ins. In addition to devotion to her Faith, her family, her community and every dog that came her way, Betty loved traveling, and NASCAR racing.

Betty leaves: Husband Dwight Patterson, one son, Brian Keith Patterson (Pamela) of Gastonia, NC. Grandchildren; Synquis Joiner of Raleigh NC, Jazmine Neal of Oklahoma, Montre’ Patterson also of Oklahoma, and Shamar Mintz,of Kings Mountain, NC; great grandchildren, Mycah Acosta, Marley Mae Acosta, Jacello Neal, J’Marianna Patterson, SyNijhe' Dauvion Stormer-Patterson, Carter Mintz, Kayln Mintz; and Mya Patterson, sisters; Jeanne Polk of Prentiss, MS, Joanne Finkel of Brooklyn, NY, Carolyn Frankie Blevins (Brian) of Charleston, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral Friday June 7, 2019at 1:30 pm Friday

Church: First Antioch Interdenominational Church
822 Floyd Lane, Gastonia

Visitation: thirty minutes before the service 

Interment: Armstrong Cemetery, Gastonia
