Dr. Otis Edward Tillman, Sr., 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at his residence in High Point, surrounded by family and friends.

Dr. Tillman was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina on July 7, 1929.  He graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1953 and Howard University Medical School in 1957.  He served his community as a medical doctor for over 45 years, and was active in several civic and service organizations, as well as the Civil Rights Movement.

Dr. Tillman was a leader, educator, motivator, and mentor to so many people.  He was a man of God and exercised his faith in all of his endeavors.  Out of his many accomplishments, his greatest joy was his family.  His union with his wife Barbara was blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Nellie, and his brother, Daniel.

Dr. Tillman was a beacon of light for his family, friends, and community.  His kindness and humility will live on through those he touched, both directly and indirectly.  Though gone from us physically, his legacy will continue to live on forever.

Funeral service will be held, Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Greater First United Baptist Church, 1409 Deep River Road. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 15, 2019 at Greater First United Baptist Church from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

If you would like to donate to one of his favorite charities in honor of his love for his community, they can be made to Macedonia Family Resource Center or North Carolina A&T Scholarship Fund.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

Online condolences may be sent to the Tillman family at phillipsfuneralserviceinc.com

Please accept my condolence for the death of Dr. Tillman. He will surely be missed in the community. He took care of many, many blacks and even delivered their babies becaue they were not able to go anywhere else due to the color of their skin. He's one of the last black physician's in High Point who touched and saved the lives of many. He may be gone but never forgotten.

My condolences to both Brian Tillman who I went to school with briefly and the entire Tillman family. I know how the passing of a great patriarch, mentor, and confident is. My grandfather (Dr. Perry Little) told me how close he and Dr. Tillman were as I was growing up in High Point and I came to know him myself. He was and always will be a GREAT example for all both young men and women to follow. He will be sorely missed.

I am so saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Tillman. He was such a kind, gracious, gentle soul. He took great pride in the care of his patients. He wore his deep faith as a badge of honor; he was truly God’s servant on earth. His calm demeanor, humble soul, and kindness will always be remembered. I admired him so much. My Brother Otis Tillman has transitioned to The Omega Chapter where all good Alpha Phi Alpha men will eventually join him. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

I was a nursing student at High Point Memorial and thought so much of Dr. Ti!!man. H was always so kind (and funny) to the nursing students. He never made us feel like we aren't worthy. I remember him limping in one day with a cane. He finally admitted he had hurt his knee,BUT did not want to tell us how. After much badgering from us he finally told us he had hurt it on his son's " hippity hop" over the weekend! You can imagine how hard it was for us not laugh! He was such a kind man and I know you will miss him.

While words fail to capture the pain of losing a loved one, we look forward to the time when words will fail to capture the joy of having our Heavenly Father return your dear one to you. God is eager to do it again. Jehovah hates death, he views it as an enemy. ( 1 Corinthians 15:26 ) He has a longing to conquer that enemy, to undo death by means of the resurrection. He yearns to bring back those who are in his memory and to see them live on earth again.- Job 14:14,15. Please visit www.jw.org to find out more about all the promises that Jehovah has in store for obedient mankind.

We're so sorry to hear you are suffering the loss of your dear loved one. May you find strength and some comfort in the words found in Nahum 1:7 which reads: ”Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of distress. He is mindful of those seeking refuge in him.” Our loving God cares about us and is ready to bring us comfort if we allow him (1John 5:14). He also has made the provision of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored into a beautiful paradise (Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55:11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your dear loved one? Find out more about this resurrection online at JW.ORG

2 Corinthians 1:3,4 gives us the assurance that "the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies" is "the God of all comfort" and he "comforts us in all our trials." James 5:11; God "is very tender in affection ["very compassionate"] and merciful." Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you!
