Bessie Lee Hooks, affectionately known as “Hooks,” was born January 8th, 1940 to Floyd and May Bell Hooks in Bishopville, SC. Bessie received her education in the Durham County Public School System.

Bessie became a lifelong resident of Newark, NJ in the early 1960s.

Bessie was a valued and devoted employee at the Remco Toy Co., Charles Bessler Co., and Mrs. Chapman’s Daycare Center. At the time of her passing, Bessie was employed by Mr. Dave Miller, owner of the Limousine Services of BP Corp.

Bessie was an active, longtime member of New Vision  Baptist Church and participated in the Shepard’s Hand, Women, and Music Ministries.

To know Bessie was to love her. She was very outspoken, honest, funny, and loving to everyone she knew and met, especially children.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and May Bell Hooks; her oldest son, Kenneth Holmes; two brothers, Floyd Hooks, Jr. and Leon Hooks; and her beloved niece, Shanteé M. Hooks.

Bessie leaves to cherish her memory her youngest son, Arbin Hooks; 3 grandchildren, Kenneth, Jr., Wesley, and Hanna; brother, Robert Louis Hooks Sr.; niece, Jacqueline Stringfellow (Anthony); nephews, Robert Louis Hooks Jr. (Tiffany), and Charles Wilson. She also leaves cousins, Pamela Jackson and Celestine Matthews (Steve); dearest friends, LaVonne Sweets, Vernell Holloway, and Gladys Blount; Goddaughters, Verdell H-Darisaw and Tina Hayward; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

 Lovingly Submitted, The Family

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. We can look forward to the promise at Isaiah 25:8 – “God will swallow up death forever, Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.” Death is an enemy that separates us from our loved ones. When Jesus promise of a resurrection is fulfilled, we will have the joy of seeing our loved ones resurrected (John 5:28, 29) and enjoy life the way our Grand Creator purposed for us…forever on earth. (Matthew 5:5)

Our condolences goes to you and yours in this most difficult time . May you find strength from the words of 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4 which reads: “Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials so that we may be able to comfort others in any sort of trial with the comfort that we receive from God." What a loving God who cares about each one of us, and is ready to help us in 9ur m9st difficult moments if we allow him to. (John 5:14) He didn't intend for us to grow old and die. He thus has made the SURE promise of a resurrection right here on earth when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalms 37:9-11, 29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55;11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your loved ones? What a joy it will bring all of us. You can go online to JW.ORG and find out more about this resurrection.
