Mr. Carroll Irvin Smith, 85, departed this earthly life on Sunday, March 24, 2019. He was born on December 5, 1933 in High Point, NC to the late Herman and Annie Saulter Smith. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred and Martha Smith.

He had an active Church life, beginning with his baptism in 1975.  He went on to serve as a Deacon at the R.C. Baldwin Church of Christ for decades where he was also the treasurer and bookkeeper.  He faithfully attended services until he was physically unable to do so.

Carroll was educated in the High Point City School System and graduated from William Penn High School. He married the love of his life, the former Cora Brockman on October 26, 1953.  This union was blessed with two sons. Carroll worked as a supervisor of Kaye Manufacturing for seven years.  He also participated in the early Civil Rights movement and integrated the High Point Transit System as the first African-American bus driver. He was later employed with Overnite (UPS) where he retired after 37 years of dedicated service. As a driver for Overnite he developed many relationships with the many customers he served.

He thoroughly enjoyed his tenure with the Guilford County School System for the last 21 years as a school bus driver, where he drove until March of this year. Carroll enjoyed the relationships he developed with the kids and their parents on his route, as well as the companionship with the school faculty and staff.

His favorite pastimes included travelling, watching sports and Sunday dinners with his family.  Carroll took his last breath doing what he loved the most, talking with his wife of 65 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Cora B. Smith of the home; one brother, Ralph Smith of High Point; one sister, Sadie Robinson of Oakland, CA; two sons, Irvin (Thelma) Smith of Arlington, TX and Wayne (Pamela) Smith of High Point; three adopted children, Margie (Quincey) Ward Johnson, Kitz Gayten and Barry Johnson; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at Sharpe Road Church of Christ, 2400 Sharpe Road, Greensboro, NC. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

God called a true Saint home. My heart is selfish and wish we could keep him with us forever but know he is truly with his creator. My love and prayers are with all of his family.

Your loved one will never have to face the last enemy death, ever again. In the meantime, his acts of faith live on until he stands up alive and whole in the paradise. God has resurrected humans in the past. The Bible reports eight instances of humans-young, old, male, and female-who were brought back to life on earth. Some had been dead for a short while, but one had been in a tomb for four days!-John 11:39-44. Learn how God will do this and more at www.jw.org

We're so sorry to hear you are suffering the loss of your dear loved one. May you find strength and some comfort in the words found in Nahum 1:7 which reads: ”Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of distress. He is mindful of those seeking refuge in him.” Our loving God cares about us and is ready to bring us comfort if we allow him (1John 5:14). He also has made the provision of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored into a beautiful paradise (Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55:11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your dear loved one? Find out more about this resurrection online at JW.ORG

To the family of kind and considerate man. He always spoke joyfully to others and his words let you know he cared. He carried himself as an outstanding role model and friend. I will carry his memories within my heart. Yes, he will be missed but his memory will last forever. Heaven gained an outstanding angel.
