Mother Vera Chestnut-Green, 91, of Hastings affectionately known as, Mother Green, was born on April 28, 1927 in Margaretta, FL to the late Thomas and Daisy Chestnut. Mother Green was educated in St. Johns County Schools, where she received her GED, and later graduated from the St. Augustine Vocational Center in 1973. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Overseer Silas Green, and to this union 11 children were born. Mother Green retired as a custodian from the St. Johns County School District in 1987. She was a former member of Pompey’s Temple COGIC under the leadership of Elder John H. Pompey. Mother Green served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher and Church Mother at Christ Witness Church, under her son, Bishop Samuel Green. Mother Green was an entrepreneur- she sold peanuts, chilly cups, quilts, handkerchiefs and candy. She will forever be remembered for her bold recitation of, “Holiness or Hell.” 

Mother Green was preceded in death by: Husband: Overseer Silas Green; Children: Ruth Naomi Green, Mae Francis Green and Isaiah Green. Siblings: Ida Mae Debardlabon and Cluster Chestnut. 

She leaves to cherish her memory:
Sons: Bishop Samuel L. (Diane) Green, Palatka, FL and Silas Green, Hastings, FL;  Daughters: Alma (Charles) Peeples, Hastings, FL, Gwendolyn Floyd, Hastings, FL, Carolyn (Anthony) Carter, Hastings, FL; Sisters: Hattie Roberts, Belfort, NY and Mazie Berry, Hastings, FL. Brother: Simon Peter Chestnut; Aunt: Cleo Williams, Glen St. Mary, FL; Sisters-in-law: Rosezena Chestnut, Dorothy Anderson, both of Hastings, FL, Geneva Grant, St. Augustine, FL and Beatrice Jackson, Jacksonville, FL; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; Goddaughters: Rose Marie Chestnut (niece) and Mary Felder; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and  friends.

The Homegoing Celebration will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Christ Witness Church of the Almighty God, Bishop Samuel L. Green, Pastor and Eulogist.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. during the “Holiness Celebration” on Friday, March 1, 2019 at Pompeyes Temple Church of God in Christ, Elder Randall Chestnut, Pastor.  Burial will take place in Oak Hill – East.
