Jerry  Franklin “JB” Byers, the son of the late Louis Byers and Leacie Hovis Byers, was born on December 31, 1943 in Gaston County, North Carolina.

Jerry graduated from Lincoln High School, Class of 1962, where he was a member of the high school choir and math club.  He was also a member of the basketball team and baseball team.  After graduation, he attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina.  After attending Livingstone College, he enlisted in the Armed Forces of the United States Army in 1966, where he was stationed in Germany before serving in the Vietnam War.  He worked for Burlington Industries in Belmont, NC and was a member of DAV in Belmont.

Jerry was a member of Springfield Baptist Church in Stanley, NC.  In 2008, he later joined Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Belmont, NC.

Jerry was a fighter, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.  He loved his family and enjoyed spending time going on vacation.  He had an extraordinary passion for cooking and catered many events.  He played and managed a local baseball team in Gastonia named The Gastonia Terps.  Baseball was his favorite pastime, LA Dodgers being his favorite baseball team.  He loved his friends dearly, enjoying countless conversations, playing cards and always planning the next BBQ.

On February 20, 2019, Jerry had finally won the race and departed his life at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville, NC.  He is preceded in death by his parents: Louis and Leacie Byers; sisters: Maxine Costner, Dorothy Byers, Sherry-Ann Byers and Leola Lewis and one brother: Nathaniel Byers.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Elizabeth H. Byers, two daughters: Nicole Byers and Misty Byers of Stanley, NC; two brothers: Cecil (MeSherry) Byers of Charlotte, NC and Lewis (Darlene) Byers of Gastonia, NC; one sister: Bonnita Byers of Gastonia, NC; two grandchildren: Brionna Greene and Zackius Lynch of Stanley, NC and a host of many other relatives and friends.
Funeral: Wednesday; February 27, 2019; 11:00 a.m.; Queen of the Apostles Roman Catholic Church-503 N. Main Street, Belmont

Visitation: one hour before the service at the church

Interment: Thursday; February 28, 2019; 10:00 a.m.; Salisbury National Cemetery-501 Statesville Blvd, Salisbury
