Mrs. Ella Mae Grant was born March 30, 1919 to the parents of John and India Hardwick. Her father was a sharecropper and her mother was a great seamstress who made clothes for the family and produced some beautiful quilts.

She grew up in Burke County and lived in the town of Midville, Georgia. She attended Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia where she was on the basketball team and graduated from Savannah State College.

Mrs. Grant was a schoolteacher who was employed in the state of Georgia and taught English, Math and Home Economics in schools that later became integrated. Education had always been very important to her and she was always teaching and openly sharing her opinion on all topics of interest to her.

She was an active member in the African Methodist Episcopal Church as the First Lady of many churches for many years. She also served as a member of the Stewardess Board and was a life member in the Missionary Society.

The Bishop of the AME Church has given her accolades for her outstanding work and service to the AME Church.
