Homegoing Services for Mrs. Doris Jean Weatherly will be on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at 11 a.m. at United Christian Church, with Minister Derrick Austin, Eulogist. Burial at Fairview Cemetery. Family visitation will be tonight 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the
funeral home.

Doris Jean Roden Weatherly was surrounded by her loving family at home when she went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019.

Doris was born and raised in Collinsville, DeKalb County, the youngest of five siblings to the union of the late Charlie D. Roden and Edna McConnell Roden. It was in her hometown that she met and married the handsome young Percy Weatherly after he returned from service in World War II.

Doris always had a thirst for knowledge, and as a young married student, she completed her college degree in English and Library Science from Alabama State University in 1957. The couple settled in Gadsden, where they both worked as educators and raised two daughters.

Doris remained a devoted teacher in the Gadsden City School system for 30 years, where she taught first grade for many of those years. She developed a special bond with many of her students that continued into their adulthood.

Doris loved the Lord and served faithfully at Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church, Gadsden, until her health declined.

Doris was a ray of sunshine that lit up a room. She was a "people" person and others were drawn to her warm personality and radiant smile. Even into her later years, she remained active in the community and could be found around town at various local events with family & friends. Some of the organizations she was affiliated with include: the Alabama State University Alumni Association, Sears Retiree Organization, Gadsden City School System Retirees, the local AARP Association, among others. Mrs. Weatherly was an honorary employee at Quality of Life Health Services because of her involvement with the organization and their health education programs and events.

"Jean", as she was affectionately called by many who loved her, will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed as we cherish her precious memory.

She is survived by daughters, Vanessa Weatherly and Tchelindria (Derrick) Austin, both of Gadsden; sister, Eleanor Roden Stewart of San Jose, California; five grandchildren, Andrea (Charles) Miller of Berea, Kentucky, Amadis Laster, Zoe Austin, Derrick Charles Austin and Delia Alexis Nail, all of Gadsden; two great-grandchildren, Charlie and David Miller of Berea; a devoted caregiver, Ms. Mary Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, many dear cousins and friends.

Service by Professionals, Gadsden Memorial Funeral Home.

We're so sorry to hear you are mourning the recent loss of your loved one. May you find strength and comfort from the words of Psalms 46:1 which reads: "God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress." Our loving God is there for us if we ask for his help (1 John 5:14). He didn't intend for us to grow old and die. He thus has made the SURE promise of a resurrection RIGHT HERE ON EARTH when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalms 37:9-11, 29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55;11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your loved ones? What a joy it will bring all of us. You can go online to JW.ORG and find out more about this resurrection.

In this difficult time in your life, may you find comfort in God’s word, the Bible. James 4:8 encourages; “Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you.”
