Mr. Charles Edward “Groundhog” Gunnings, son of the late Clyde Russell Gunnings, Sr. and the late Katie Mae Murriell Moore.  He was born on June 6, 1948 in Gaston County, Dallas, NC.  He departed this life on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Peak Resources in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Mr. Gunnings attended Highland High School in Gastonia, North Carolina.  After graduation, he joined the Marine Corps on December 12, 1966 until September 11, 1976.  He served six years and was a rifleman.

During his time in service, he learned a trade as a welder.  He was employed by Automatic Transmission Shop in Gastonia, NC until it shut down.  He was also employed by Gibson Machine Shop in Dallas, NC.

He is survived by two sisters: Martha Sanders (Kurtis) of King Fisher, Ok and Joni M. Clinton (Odell) of Lincolnton, NC; one brother: Clyde Russell gunnings (Sandra) of Kings Mountain, NC; two half sisters: Nancy Gardner and Johnnie Mae Hunnicut of Gastonia, NC; two favorite nieces: Derema Moore of Gastonia, NC and Mari Sanders of King Fisher, OK; one favorite cousin: Melanie Graham of Belmont, NC and a very special aunt: Annie Murriell of Dallas, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
 
Funeral: Friday; January 4, 2019; 2:00 p.m.; Humphrey Chapel AME Zion Church-603 West Main Street, Dallas, NC

Visitation: one hour before the service at the church
