Mrs. Laura Nell Skillern was born July 16, 1938 to the late Tommy Hill and Freda Sharp in Cowan, Tennessee. Laura transcended into celestial peace on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at her residence. Laura moved to Chattanooga at an early age, and this is where she met and married her late husband, Eugene Skillern. After graduating, Laura began a lifelong career of serving others, which included 32 years of service, employed at Erlanger Hospital, beginning in 1967, serving as a Ward Clerk. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age, uniting with Allen Temple AME Church, where she was a longtime, faithful member. In later years, Laura joined the membership of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member and served on the Mother’s Board until her health began to fail. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Eugene Skillern; siblings, Queenie Mary Melveline Williams, Paul Easton, Frank Hill, Linda Jean Christopher, and Izora McKeldin; and grandson, Joshua Cheeks. Those she leaves to cherish her unforgettable memories include: brother, William “Junebug” Hill, Sr. of Cincinnati, OH; sister, Gladys Winston of Chattanooga; sons, Lester “TY” Hill, Andre (Michelle) Sharpe, Sr., Jeffrey (Tina) Cheeks, Sr., and Grover (Wanda) Cheeks, all of Chattanooga; daughter, Freda (Tommy) Townsend of Chattanooga; devoted nephew, William Vaughn Hill of Cincinnati, OH, whom she raised as a son; grandchildren, Carlos (Tess) Hardy, Taneka Hill, Latoya Little, Takellia (Bay) Bell, Tenisha (Alan) Cheeks-Duckett, Andre (Erika) Sharpe, Jr., Renee Townsend, Tommy (Artieka) Townsend, III, Demarcus Cheeks, Jeffrey Cheeks, Jr., Marissa Sharpe, Alexius Sharpe, and Matthew Sharpe; 31 great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
