Deacon Harvey King Jr. was born to the late Mrs. Willie Lee Matthews King and the late Mr. Harvey King Sr., in Thomaston, Upson County Georgia, on August 22, 1934. He attended public school in Thomaston, completing high school at Thomaston Training School.
When he completed high school, he joined the United States Army. He completed his tenure of two years and received an Honorable discharge on October 31,1962.
He met and fell in love with Ms. Joyce Green and they were joined in Holy Matrimony on April 2, 1962. They were the proud parents of four children and another one they raised as their own. To provide for his family, he worked for the City of Thomaston Water and Sewer Department and was a faithful and loyal employee. He was also a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfathers. He and his wife shared 52 years of marriage together until her passing on April 2, 2014.
Deacon Harvey King was a longtime member of the Mary Lizzie Baptist Church. He served in the Deacon’s Ministry, the Youth Ministry, and the Usher’s Ministry, sang in the Male Choir, and loved the preaching of the word of God. He received the greatest joy working with the Youth Ministry. During his leisure time, he enjoyed going to church, singing in the choir gardening, fishing, yard work, sharing wisdom with his family, and watching the Atlanta Braves.
On May 3, 2018, the Lord looked down and saw his son in distress. He whispered his name and told him all things were now ready. His spirit took flight and went home to rest. He was preceded in death by one son, Walter Holmes, and two sisters, Virginia Ross and Millie Williams. He will be greatly missed by his family, church family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory: four children, Mrs. Angela (Curtis) Perry, Mrs. Virginia (Timmy) Lyons, Mr. Melvin Green and Mr. Horace Montgomery; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as other relatives and friends.
