On Tuesday morning February 19th, 2019, Elder Waymon Harold Surgeon, sweetly and peacefully transitioned from this earthly existence into sweet rest with our heavenly father. His funeral will be held 10:45AM at World Victory International Christian Center, 1414 Cliffwood Dr., Greensboro, North Carolina 27406. Visitations will start at 10:00AM at the church. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Waymon was the 13th of thirteen children born to the late Will Surgeon and Sarah Love Surgeon, on May 1st, 1932 in Guilford County, NC. Waymon was educated in Guilford County Public School and graduated from James B. Dudley Senior High School. Being the youngest, his brothers and sisters were very protective over their baby brother.  As a teenager he worked with his father gardening and was very good with his chores.

He married the love of his life, Mae Ruth Marsh, on January 26th, 1952. To their union were born 4 children, Anthnette, Ron, Waymon Cornelle, and Angelia. Providing for his wife and children was always first and foremost concern of his. He was an entrepreneur.  He started a construction company, “Surgeon’s Concrete”.  Also, during the times wood stoves were used to heat homes, he and his sons would head to the coal yards loading bags of coal and then off to the community to sale them.  This company was called Surgeon’s Oil and Coal. Waymon worked many years for Boren Brick in Pleasant Garden, N.C. and he retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Company after 27 years of employment.

Waymon was a faithful member of Anderson Grove Baptist Church. Through his Christian work at Anderson Grove, he was instrumental and hands on in the building of the final edifice. For many years at Anderson Grove he was chairman of the Trustee Board and later ordained as a Deacon under the pastorage of Rev. E. S. Anderson. Later he became an Elder under the leadership of Bishop Adrian Starks.

Elder Waymon was also musically gifted, playing lead guitar and singing. He was the founder and member of the “Gospel Travelers Quartet”. They traveled throughout N.C. and S.C. spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through song and praise. He tirelessly served God, his church, the community until his health limited his service, but his heart, mind and soul continued to belong to the Lord.

To know him was a joy because being around him you felt, saw and knew how much he loved God and God’s word, which he read, lived and freely shared with everyone he met. “I am for peace” was one of his favorite sayings and a part of his legacy that he would want his family to continue to live by.

He was pre-deceased by his father, mother 6 brothers, 5 sisters, and one daughter, Anthnette Surgeon Davis.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 67 years, Mae; his children Ronnie (Brenda), Waymon Cornelle, Angelia (Maurice); one sister, Sarah Stephens; one sister-in-law, Claretta Surgeon, all of Greensboro, NC.  His grandchildren, Iris Lane of New York, Ronnie Surgeon II of Las Vegas, Shannon Barfield (Michael), Rick and Nick Burns of Greensboro, and Kora Brown of Durham. Great grands, Paris Surgeon, NaiLayah Monroe, Christian Burns, Amber and Angel Barfield, Kayden Burns, Jacob Brown, Joshua Munlyn and 2 great-great grands, AJ and Adelle Williams. There are also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will also cherish his memory.

We're sorry to hear about your recent loss. Accept our sincere condolences. May you find strength from the words of Philippians 4:13 which says: "For all things I have the strength through the one who gives me power." What a loving God who cares about each one of us. He didn't intend for us to grow old and die. He thus has made the SURE promise of a resurrection right here on earth when it is restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalms 37:9-11, 29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 55;11). Can you see yourself welcoming back to life your loved ones? What a joy it will bring all of us. You can go online to JW.ORG and find out more about this resurrection.

God will sustain you with his "right hand of righteousness" during this difficult time and through each passing day. Isaiah 41:10 says: "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be anxious, for I am your God, I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness." Isaiah 41:13; I "am grasping your right hand, the One [God] saying to you,...'I will help you.'" Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you! (Psalm 36:7; 1 Peter 5:7)
