Demetria Smith Powell transitioned from this life Monday, November 12, 2018. Her funeral will be held 1:00PM on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Holmes Grove United Methodist Church, 1100 Alamance Church Road, Greensboro, NC. Visitations will start 1hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
She was born in Mebane, NC on September 6, 1934, one of eight children born to Robina Jones and Samuel T. Smith. Demetria was raised in Mebane and educated in Graham, NC, after which she moved to New York City and worked for most the 60’s. She bore a son, Luther Duron Wagstaff, which preceded her in death. She moved to Greensboro in the mid 60’s and during this time she became a den mother of Cub Scouts of America, that included Denzel Washington in her troop. Demetria carried her troop to the March on Washington to hear the “I Have A Dream Speech” by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whom she met.
Demetria met her husband of 41 years, Louis Powell, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Old North State Temple #142, were she was very active in her duties as an Elk, she also held the title of Grand Past Daughter Ruler. She was also a member of Holmes Grove United Methodist Church. She was very active as in the United Methodist Women, in her church family and her community. She was also known to many as Motorcycle Mama, she had many bikes that included her favorite, her Harley Davidson. She gained a lot of recognition riding for charities and with motorcycle clubs all over NC. Demetria had a room full of accolades and she collected snow globes.
In addition to her parents, her son, and her husband, Demetria is preceded in death by her siblings, William Alexander Smith, Monroe Hailey Smith, Samuel Gwynn Smith, Fred Tinsley Smith, Elizabeth Francis Hester and Mary Clark Smith-Webster.
She leaves to cherish her memories one sister, Deloris Robina Jones; one daughter, Ellunora Demetria Powell “Lulu” of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Erika Demetria Powell-Bullard, Caleb Duron Martin Powell, Valoran LeKya Armani Powell and Kashmir NyKesha Pratt; three great grandchildren, Cayden Mason Powell, Caleigh Madison Powell and Journee Marie Divine Bradshaw; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
